LMDS or Local Multi-point Distribution Service is licensed fixed broadband wireless spectrum which supports the transmission of a large amount of data at a very high rate of speed using readily available LMDS radio technology. LMDS radios are installed at two locations and are pointed towards one another, creating a point to point connection. However, in order for this broadband wireless communication link to function effectively there must be line of sight between the two end points with no buildings, trees or other structures in the path.

When one end of the wireless access link is connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) end users are connected to carrier grade voice and data services. LMDS wireless links can be positioned on multiple buildings in an office campus setting to create a wide area network (WAN).

By providing end user customers with services equal to those that an Incumbant Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC) can offer, LMDS provides a foundation for Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) to augment and even expand their service areas thereby becoming an even more viable competitor to the ILECs.
